    Refuge Decan

Led by Bertrand Lafrance, a KlimateNet member and President of DECAN Djibouti, this carbon removal initiative is based in the Douda Nature Reserve—a 680-hectare animal refuge managed by DECAN. The project focuses on restoring and protecting biodiverse ecosystems, from acacia to mangrove forests.

These forests are natural carbon sinks that also combat erosion and soil degradation—vital tools in the fight against climate change. By preserving biodiversity, the project supports food security for vulnerable communities most at risk from increasing desertification. The area is also home to sand dunes, beaches, and over 150 species of birds, along with diverse mammals, reptiles, and marine life.

    Project Goals

    1. Combat overgrazing

    2. Control the spread of invasive species (notably Prosopis juliflora)

    3. Prevent wild harvesting (especially sand extraction)

    4. Promote reforestation and mangrove restoration through nurseries and eco-tourism

    5. Located near Djibouti's capital, this project is transforming the reserve into a clean, accessible, and educational natural space.

    Beneficiary Communities

    1. Artisanal fishers and traditional charcoal makers

    2. Residents of neighboring villages (providing employment opportunities)

    3. City dwellers and schools (for environmental education and nature-based recreation)

    Current Needs

    1. $5,000 in funding for electric equipment (to build bridges and manage tree cutting)

    2. Expertise in producing biochar from Prosopis juliflora

    3. Support for biochar carbon credit certification

    4. Volunteers for reforestation and mangrove activities

    5. Field data sharing (photos, videos, documents) to build project transparency and momentum

    Opportunities Available

    1. Internships at DECAN’s wildlife shelter in Djibouti

    2. Research collaborations in forest and mangrove ecosystem restoration

    📍Past Field Visit 🗓️ Feb 12–20, 2025

A field trip was held with a small group of KlimateNet members.

Objective: Understand the project’s challenges in integrating conservation, reforestation, and mangrove restoration, and to explore solutions for managing invasive species such as:

    • - Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) – grows rapidly, displaces native flora, and depletes groundwater

    • - House crow (Corvus splendens) – disrupts local fauna

    ✅ Watch the video.
